Abstract

This domain is found in proteinase inhibitors as well as in many extracellular proteins. The domain typically contains ten cysteine residues that form five disulphide bonds. The cysteine residues that form the disulphide bonds are 1-7, 2-6, 3-5, 4-10 and 8-9.

This inhibitor domain belongs to MEROPS inhibitor family I8 (clan IA). Proteins containing this domain inhibit peptidases belonging to families S1 , S8 , and M4 [PubMed14705960] and are restricted to the chordata, nematoda, arthropoda and echinodermata. Examples of proteins containing this domain are:

  • chymotrypsin/elastase inhibitor from Ascaris suum (pig roundworm)
  • Acp62F protein from Drosophila melanogaster
  • Bombina trypsin inhibitor from Bombina maxima (large-webbed bell toad)
  • Bombyx subtilisin inhibitor from Bombyx mori (silk moth)
  • von Willebrand factor

Browse genome assignments for this superfamily. The SUPERFAMILY hidden Markov model library has been used to carry out SCOP domain assignments to all genomes at the superfamily level.

Alignments of sequences to 5 models in this superfamily are available by clicking on the 'Alignments' icon above. PDB sequences less than 40% identical are shown by default, but any other sequence(s) may be aligned. Select PDB sequences, genome sequences, or paste in or upload your own sequences.

Browse and view proteins in genomes which have different domain combinations including a Serine protease inhibitors domain.

Examine the distribution of domain superfamilies, or families, across the major taxonomic kingdoms or genomes within a kingdom. This gives an immediate impression of how superfamilies, or families, are restricted to certain kingdoms of life.

Explore domain occurrence network where nodes represent genomes and edges are domain architectures (shared between genomes) containing the superfamily of interest.

There are 5 hidden Markov models representing the Serine protease inhibitors superfamily. Information on how the models are built, and plots showing hydrophobicity, match emmission probabilities and insertion/deletion probabilities can be inspected.
